Samantha has been parked in her trailer at the same location for about five months. According to Samantha, the hostility began almost immediately after she arrived. “Somebody came up to my door and stood on the outside of the door for a long time, and he was just standing there, and then he goes, ‘I want you out of here.’ I was like, ‘Dude, I just got here.’ He’s like, ‘Well, we don’t want your kind in our neighborhood,'” Samantha recounted.
Harassment from Neighbors
Unfortunately, the harassment didn’t stop there. Samantha claims that passersby have thrown dog feces at her trailer and even urinated on it in broad daylight. She expressed her disbelief at the behavior of some of the housed residents, saying, “These are people who are housed, and I’m supposed to be the one that’s messed up?” Samantha’s experience highlights the extent of the animosity that some Portland residents harbor toward those living on the streets.

She understands why neighbors might be uneasy about large homeless encampments, but she insists that she is not contributing to the problem. “I keep to myself, and I work and I’m trying to go forward from where I’m at, and they’re not making it easy,” she said.

Samantha also advises others in her situation to avoid creating problems for themselves or their communities. “If you’re going to be outside and try to do something better with your life, don’t make a huge mess or make a nuisance of yourself or whatever. That’s not cool,” she said.
