Additionally, while we think of a day as 24 hours, a sidereal day – Earth’s full rotation relative to fixed stars – is actually about 23 hours and 56 minutes. We use a solar day, which accounts for the Earth’s movement in its orbit, giving us the familiar 24-hour day.

The Earth’s rotational axis is tilted at about 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system. This tilt, as McColgan describes, is what gives us our seasons.
